TOPIC: DRINK YOURSELF DRY
I’ve always wondered while washing my dishes - “if I left the faucet on for the rest of time… would the water ever run out?”... don’t worry I’m not gonna try and find out. The average person uses 80-100 gallons of water every DAY. You can picture a gallon of milk right? Imagine using 100 of them daily. That’s madness, but it makes sense in a strange way. Water is such a huge part of our lives, but we rarely think about how to conserve it.

ENERGY/ELECTRICITY:
Water is a limited resource. Making it drinkable uses a lot of energy. California State Water Project uses 3% of the state’s total energy… just transporting water. How wild is that? Nearly half of daily water use in America is dedicated to cooling systems in power plants that produce electricity.”
We gotta keep our lights on.

FOOD SHORTAGES:
The global population is increasing, but our water supply isn’t. We need water to grow crops and feed livestock, but we have the exact same amount of water that this continent had thousands of years ago. Spooky but true.
ECOLOGICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES:
Water scarcity threatens ecosystems worldwide. More than half of the Earth's wetlands have dried up or been destroyed. The Colorado River used to flow all the way to the ocean, but now it starts to dry up when it crosses the border into Mexico. Communities in Mexico that have grown food using water from the Colorado River now have to find food elsewhere. This is happening… everywhere. For example, when I waste water in LA, I am directly taking food away from someone in Mexico.

This one should be obvious. Water shortages are felt quite often here in California. In 2014, CA faced its worst drought in 500 years. Crops dry, wildfires ignite and livestock starve.

LESS MEAT:
Even if you ate one less beef steak each year, you would be saving 44 bathtubs of water.

WASTE LESS FOOD:
The crops that we eat take tons of water to grow and maintain. Stop overbuying from Trader Joe’s. This is especially real right now.
DON’T WASTE WATER:
Drink all the water you have in your bottle! If your ice water turns warm, pour it onto some plants.

SHORTER SHOWERS:
The average 8 minute shower actually uses more than a bath! Or even better...take less showers! Humans aren’t designed to bathe every day. 2-4 showers a week are more than enough to keep the body healthy. Spending just one minute less in a shower per day could save an average of 1638 gallons of water each year.

CHECK YOUR PLUMBING:
This one might sound obvious but it’s really common. Call your landlord.
CLOTHING:
THIS IS A BIG ONE. It takes 2700 liters of water to make a standard cotton shirt. So.. if you can... try and support clothing companies that make durable clothing! (...we all know the companies that sell clothing that falls apart in five minutes) (... H&M). Second hand and vintage clothing also rules.

TURN YOUR DAMN FAUCET OFF:
Another potentially obvious one, but it makes a big difference. Turn that thing off in between brushing teeth or while scrubbing dishes.
LAUNDRY:
Only do full loads of laundry. So much water wasted here.

AVOID WATERING LAWN:
Turn off your automatic sprinklers during the rainy season.

WATER BOTTLES:
Man, if you can avoid them, don’t just casually drink water bottles. The plastic and the waste here is bananas. Grab a reusable one! Here is a link to find your perfect bottle.
